Analysis of changes in energy use pattern of wheat crop in two decades – A study of central India CIGR Journal

For sustainable agriculture a fair balance between different categories of input energy with optimum output need to be established. The main objective of this paper was to investigate the energetics of wheat production for long term (20 years) in central India through a large scale survey which focused on (i) Farmers categories wise energy use pattern (ii) operation wise energy use pattern (iii) source wise energy use pattern. The finding of this research showed that as the farm size increased the input energy per unit was also increased. The input energy was found minimum for marginal farmer’s categories and the maximum energy input for large farmers. Area response in wheat production: The Australian wheat-sheep zone AgEcon

This paper investigates the key decision parameters of farmers related to the allocation of land between wheat production and pasture for sheep (wool) production. Wheat area supply response, is estimated across the Australian wheat-sheep zone using data for the period 1991 to 2004. Statistical results reveal that wheat growers in Western Australia are more price responsive than growers in the eastern states. Area adjustment is not significantly different between the regions. Rainfall has a positive influence on wheat production while time-related exogenous factors such as technical progress seemed to have little influence on the wheat yield over this period.

Farmer management of production risk on degraded lands: the role of wheat genetic diversity in Tigray Region, Ethiopia AgEcon

This paper investigates the effects of wheat genetic diversity and land degradation on risk and agricultural productivity in less favored production environments of a developing agricultural economy. Drawing production data from household survey conducted in the highlands of Ethiopia, we estimate a stochastic production function to evaluate the effects of variety richness, land degradation, and their interaction on the mean and the variance of wheat yield. Ethiopia is a centre of diversity for durum wheat and farmers manage complex variety mixtures on multiple plots. Econometric evidence shows that variety richness increases farm productivity. Impact of global warming on Chinese wheat productivity AgEcon

Climate change continues to have major impact on crop productivity all over the world. While many researchers have evaluated the possible impact of global warming on crop yields using mainly indirect crop simulation models, there are relatively few direct assessments on the impact of observed climate change on past crop yield and growth. We use a 1979-2000 Chinese crop-specific panel dataset to investigate the climate impact on Chinese wheat yield growth. We find that a 1 percent increase in wheat growing season temperature reduces wheat yields by about 0.3 percent. This negative impact is less severe than those reported in other regions. Measuring the Efficiency of Wheat Production of Western Australian Growers AgEcon

Using stochastic frontier analysis, efficiency of production of wheat in Western Australia was studied. The production function model used was a relatively simple input model, consisting of wheat yield, effective rainfall, fertilizer application rates and year of study. Inefficiency was captured in a second model that incorporated machinery capital investment, opening equity level, and year of study. Data covered the production years 2004 through to 2007. The results demonstrated that inefficiency was present in wheat production in Western Australia and that inefficiency increased over the period from 18% in 2004 to 29% in 2007. Revenue volatility faced by Australian wheat farmers AgEcon

This paper uses variance decomposition modelling to explore how wheat revenue volatility in Australia has changed spatially and temporally. The components of revenue variance are the variances and covariances of wheat prices, the area of wheat harvested and the yield of wheat. The key finding is that the volatility of wheat revenue (detrended) has more than doubled in every main wheat-growing State in Australia over the last 15 years or so Changes in wheat areas are mostly a minor source of revenue variance. The principal cause of volatility is yield changes with price changes increasing slightly in absolute importance when compared to their adjacent previous period.
